Utopia is a Swiss fintech company developing advanced data-driven solutions for the music industry.
Utopia provides cash advances to artists based on historical music royalties, to be repaid via future streaming revenues from platforms like Spotify. Typically, the principal for these short-term advances is recovered within one year
Principal repayment level per month of origination
Cumulative principal repayments (collections) per vintage issuance as of August 31st, 2023.
Utopia's model has shown impressive resilience, even during crises. Their conservative projection methodologies combined with rigorous artist assessment processes have ensured excellent returns and a near-zero default rate for over a decade.
The main risk here is an incorrect prediction of future payments received by artists. In such cases, it may take slightly longer for investors to get back their funds. At the same time, any delay will also be compensated by interest payments. This means that in the end, investors will get back their principal, scheduled interest, and additional late interest.
As cash flow is controlled by Esketit and i2 group through the SPV, there is no risk that the loan originator could use funds for other business needs. It's highly unlikely that an artist will get no more listens to their music and therefore will get no more royalty payments.
